United Nations May 22: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned Israel’s establishment of a military base at the site of a former UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) office in occupied East Jerusalem, calling the move a violation of international law.
According to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the facility, located in the Sheikh Jarrah area, remains United Nations premises despite its takeover. He said the actions taken by Israel constitute “a breach of the inviolability of United Nations premises.”
Dujarric stated that the UNRWA compound continues to be part of the United Nations system and stressed that “unprecedented and escalatory measures against UNRWA” undermine its protected status under international law.
He further said that Israel is not entitled to exercise sovereign authority in any part of the occupied Palestinian territory and is obligated to end its “unlawful presence” as soon as possible.
The UN reaction comes amid escalating tensions over operations of UNRWA in the region and ongoing conflict-related developments in occupied East Jerusalem.
