WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said Saturday that the United States and Israel would hold off on launching new strikes against Iran, linking the decision to efforts to reach a rapid agreement aimed at ending the months-long conflict.
Trump said the decision followed requests from Iran and other Middle Eastern countries to avoid further military escalation.
“Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.
The US president said any agreement would require the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.
“The Country of Israel joins me in this commitment,” Trump said, calling for efforts to finalize a deal.
The announcement came after concerns grew that fighting could intensify following Trump’s earlier warnings of possible renewed strikes against Iran. Reports had suggested that the United States and Israel were considering additional attacks, including potential targets linked to Iran’s energy infrastructure.
Trump had earlier said the United States was prepared to use significant military force against Iran, but later confirmed that the planned action would be paused.
The conflict, which began on February 28 after US and Israeli strikes on Iran, has continued through repeated exchanges of attacks, with renewed tensions in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly urged Trump to avoid further escalation during a phone call, according to Axios, citing US officials. A source familiar with the conversation said the Saudi leader encouraged de-escalation and restraint.
The White House has not immediately commented on the reported conversation.
