KARACHI: The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on Sunday clarified that the strong gas smell reported in several areas of Karachi was caused by temporary testing activities linked to the commissioning of a new pipeline near Abul Hasan Ispahani Road.
The gas utility said system pressures remain normal and no gas leakage has been detected anywhere in the affected areas. It explained that testing of odorisation plants was underway, during which a higher amount of odorant was added to natural gas, resulting in a stronger smell.
SSGC said the increased odorant concentration prompted complaints from residents who suspected gas leaks. However, the company maintained that the smell was not due to any leakage but was part of the ongoing testing process.
The company urged consumers to remain calm and continue their routine activities, assuring them that the gas distribution network was operating within normal parameters.
The clarification came after residents in different parts of Karachi reported an unusual gas smell, raising concerns over possible leaks.
In a separate development earlier this year, a Karachi court found SSGC responsible for negligence in a case related to the deaths of two citizens in a 2022 gas explosion in Orangi Town’s Millat Colony.
The court directed the company to pay Rs30 million in compensation to the affected family. The case involved allegations that repeated complaints about a faulty gas line were not addressed, leading to the fatal incident.
