YouTube has fully restored its services after a brief but widespread global outage that disrupted video access for millions of users on Tuesday, the company confirmed.
The outage, which began around early Tuesday morning in the United States and spread to users in India, Britain, Australia and Mexico, was traced to a malfunction in YouTube’s recommendation system, an internal mechanism that drives what content users see on the homepage, app feeds and related platforms.
At the peak of the disruption, outage tracking website Downdetector logged more than 320,000 user reports in the U.S. alone. Reports of access failures, error messages and missing content came from users trying to use various YouTube products, including YouTube.com, the YouTube app, YouTube Music, YouTube Kids and YouTube TV.
In an official update, YouTube said the issue had been resolved and that all services were back to normal, with videos, recommendations and feeds functioning as expected. The company did not immediately elaborate on what specifically caused the recommendation glitch.
The disruption briefly left users unable to watch videos, access subscription feeds or navigate features on both mobile and web platforms, prompting widespread frustration on social media and internet forums.
While YouTube continues to be one of the world’s most-watched platforms, with billions of users globally and more than a billion hours of daily watch time, outages like this underscore the reliance of millions on digital infrastructure and the challenges tech companies face in maintaining uninterrupted service.
