NEW YORK — The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has formally urged the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action in favor of admitting the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations, underscoring the urgency of international action to resolve the long-standing Palestinian issue.
Speaking on behalf of the OIC at a Security Council session in New York, Turkey’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Asli Guven, called on council members to recognize Palestine’s entitlement to full membership following years of diplomatic efforts and growing global support.
“We call for the timely action of the council on admitting Palestine as a full-fledged member of the United Nations,” Guven said, emphasizing the humanitarian and political cost of the two-year conflict in Gaza and the broader occupied Palestinian territories.
Guven highlighted what she described as a “new vista” for peace opened by recent diplomatic developments, including the Gaza ceasefire agreement brokered earlier this month. She also reaffirmed the OIC’s support for a durable peace in the Middle East and its opposition to ongoing occupation policies.
The OIC’s appeal follows a May 2024 United Nations General Assembly resolution that upgraded Palestine’s rights at the UN and urged the Security Council to give favorable consideration to its full membership bid. The Assembly’s emergency session resolution was adopted with a significant majority, signaling broad international backing, though it stopped short of granting full membership and requires a Security Council recommendation.
Under current UN rules, admission of new members must be recommended by the Security Council before final approval by the Assembly. Past efforts for Palestine’s membership have been hindered by vetoes and divisions within the Council.
The OIC’s renewed push adds to mounting diplomatic pressure on the Security Council to advance Palestine’s status, reflecting ongoing shifts in international recognition and support for Palestinian statehood.
