Security forces on Friday thwarted a major terrorist attack in Balochistan’s Kharan district, killing 12 militants during coordinated counter-terrorism operations, according to the military’s media wing.
The Inter-Services Public Relations said the attackers were part of an India-sponsored militant group and had targeted key installations, including a police station and two commercial banks.
Officials said the militants looted cash from the banks and attempted to take hostages at the police station. Security forces responded promptly, preventing the hostage situation and launching clearance operations across the area.
Initial engagements resulted in the killing of four militants, while the remaining attackers were eliminated in follow-up encounters. One civilian was injured during the clashes and is being treated at a military hospital.
Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti commended the Frontier Corps and security personnel for their swift response. He said extremist groups are increasingly resorting to organised criminal acts alongside militant activity and warned that such elements would be dealt with through intelligence-led operations.
Bugti also highlighted concerns regarding digital infrastructure in remote areas, calling for stronger oversight to prevent misuse by hostile elements. At the same briefing, he announced a provincial initiative to expand fibre-optic connectivity to educational and health institutions.
The ISPR said security forces remain on high alert and that search and clearance operations continue in Kharan and nearby areas. Authorities reiterated their commitment to counter-terrorism efforts under the National Action Plan and the federally approved Azm-e-Istihkam strategy.
